Implementation Details by Component

1. Immutability Enforcement

Mechanism: Python frozen dataclasses (immutable after creation)

Effect: Any attempt to modify an audit event after creation raises FrozenInstanceError. This enforces write-once semantics at the application level.

2. Identity & Authority Chain

Every audit event captures both agent and organization context:

Policy Alignment: Satisfies "identity → authority → decision → action chain" requirement by capturing both parties at every event.

3. Event-Specific Payloads

Each AuditEvent can include one of these payloads:

- DisclosureEventRecord (D0-D4 taxonomy) - PHIAccessRecord (ALLOWED/DENIED/REDACTED) - PolicyDecisionRecord (action + violations) - EscalationEventRecord (trigger + outcome)

4. Event Chaining (Integrity)

Events link via previous_event_id to form an unbroken chain:

Integrity Benefit: Removing or reordering events breaks the chain, making tampering detectable.

The AuditTrail class provides methods to reconstruct the session state:

Gap Analysis

Status: All Core Requirements Implemented

All 11 policy requirements for ATR-01 are implemented in v1.0. The implementation provides write-once audit events, identity capture, event chaining, and session reconstruction capability. No critical gaps.

Known Limitations (Deferred to Phase 2)

1. Cryptographic Evidence Hash
The evidence_hash field is present in AuditEvent but not populated in v1.0. HMAC-SHA256 signing planned for Phase 2 to enable cryptographic tamper detection at the storage layer.
2. Persistent Storage
Current implementation maintains audit trails in session memory only. Production requires persistent storage (S3, CloudWatch Logs, DynamoDB, or WORM archive).
3. Retention Policy Enforcement
Schema supports indefinite retention; healthcare compliance requires 7-year minimum. Retention policy implementation deferred pending legal/compliance review.
4. Multi-Agent Delegation Chains
Current schema supports single agent identity. The delegation_chain field is prepared but not fully utilized for scenarios with human supervisor → AI agent → escalation queue chains.
5. External Timestamp Authority
Application-level timestamps only. Production systems may require external time authority (NTP, HSM) for legal evidence in dispute scenarios.
